Concept - Morphology

Definition (s.32): the study of how words are built from morphemes, the small meaningful units that make up words. E.g. un-like-ly contains three morphemes.

  • Stem: main part of a word that stays the same when endings are added; writ is the stem of writes, writing, written (s.32).
  • Affix: prefix or suffix adhering to a stem, often with a grammatical function; e.g. the -s of likes (s.32).
  • Inflectional stemming = “morphological analysis”: normalisation limited to grammatical variants (singular/plural, present/past) (s.33).
