Word Sense Relations
Relations among word surface forms and their senses (02 Pre-processing s.22):
| Relation | Form | Meaning | Example (slide) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homonymy | same | different | bank: river bank / financial institution |
| Polysemy | same | related | man: human species / male of the species / adult males |
| Synonymy | different | same | singer, vocalist |
Why it matters: a bag-of-words treats each surface form as one feature, so homonyms are conflated and synonyms are split (see Concept - Bag of Words).
