Concept - Biometric Authentication

Definition: authenticate a user from one of their physical characteristics: facial, fingerprint, hand geometry, retina pattern, iris, signature, voice (s.24). Static biometrics = what you are; dynamic biometrics = what you do (s.5).

Cost vs accuracy chart (s.24): iris is highest in both; retina and finger have middle accuracy (retina costlier); hand, signature, face, voice have lower accuracy, cost falling from hand to voice (read by eye, no numbers).

Accuracy (s.25): the system produces a matching score that quantifies similarity between the input and the stored template. Concerns: sensor noise and detection inaccuracy. Errors: false match (an imposter’s score passes the threshold) and false non-match (a genuine user’s score falls below it). A decision threshold separates accept from reject; the imposter and genuine-user curves overlap, so moving trades one error for the other.

Added context

Which error is which side of the threshold is the standard reading of the figure on s.25; the slide only labels the shaded tails.
